Vilanculos (or Vilankulo) is a coastal town in Mozambique, situated in the Vilanculos District of Inhambane Province. Vilanculos is named after a local tribal chief by the name Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke. Known as Vilanculos during colonial times, the name was changed to Vilankulo at independence. Today the district is called Vilanculos and the town Vilankulo.
The coastal town of Vilanculos in Mozambique offers visitors easy access to the unspoilt majesty of the Bazaruto Archipelago, a protected World Wildlife Trust marine reserve and cultural reserve. The Vilanculos International Airport has undergone a substantial upgrade and offers guests daily flights to a number of destinations including Johannesburg and Maputo.
