Spier Wine Farm Activities
There are a host of things to do at Spier Wine Farm. Spier the top award in the ‘Doing It All’ category in the Condé Nast Traveler World Saver Award. Below are just some of the activities you can do during your stay at Spier.
Wine Tasting
Come with your friends or bring the kids! Enjoy stunning views of the Helderberg mountains and buy wine at cellar door prices. Award-winning wine paired with innovative food is what you’ll find at the tasting room on the banks of the Spier dam. Relax in the airy lounge area, and enjoy stunning views of the Helderberg mountains, or take your glass outside onto the sunny patio and gaze across the rolling lawns. For wine tasting, settle in at the parquet tables and enjoy a set wine tasting, with or without a food pairing, or order whatever you like with an olive, cheese or cured meat board.
Picnics
Tuck into a hamper packed with delicious farm-style favorites on the shady lawns. There are four different options (including gluten-free and vegetarian) that cater for every palate and wallet. Each are made with local, natural and organic produce wherever possible. You can collect your hamper at the picnic shop. Pop into Eight to Go Deli next door too if you need to stock up on sunscreen, sweet treats, drinks and produce from the farm, before heading out to find a shady spot on the lawn.
Eagle Encounters
Eagle Encounters aims at rehabilitating and releasing birds of prey, promoting conservation and education, on land donated by Spier. Birds of prey keep the farm’s ecosystem in balance, making it possible to naturally control pests, without pesticides. Enjoy up-close-and-personal interactions with eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, kites, buzzards, snakes and lizards. Take part in heart-stopping falconry displays. Kids will also enjoy the piglets, rabbits, tortoises, chickens and unique playground.
Segway Tours
Glide through the vineyards. Two-wheeled, self-balancing, battery powered personal transporters: Segways are the coolest way to do a breezy lap around the farm. See the vineyards and natural farming practices in action against the backdrop of the soaring Helderberg. Glide around the indigenous River Garden and yin-yang wastewater recycling plant, then through the leafy vineyards. Go via the farmlands before resting your wheels and stopping for a wine tasting. A Segway tour around the winelands at dusk is a great way to see the sun set on another perfect day in the Cape.
Craft Market
Buy local and make some yourself. Take home a piece of the Spier farm life or pick out a special keepsake from the collection of contemporary and traditional artworks by Southern African craft producers. The craft market at Spier is situated under the trees, along the banks of the dam, right next to the Tasting Room. At the market you will find a showcase of some of the best craftwork produced in the greater Cape Town area. Wire and beadwork, 3-dimensional paintings, mosaics, items from recycled materials, jewellery, textiles, ceramics and woodcarving are all represented. Whether you want something simple like a key ring or fridge magnet, or a collectable art piece, there will be something to win your heart. Many of the artists work on site several days a week and would be happy to answer your questions and share the production process with you. Learn to mosaic; try your hand at beading; throw a pot. You can do it all at the Spier craft market.
Walks
There is so much to explore at Spier and it’s best done on foot (or on a Segway). Dive into history, learn more about nature, spot interesting art pieces and find out more about our sustainability ethos on one of these interesting tours.
Heritage Walk (1.5 hours or hop on/off at any point)
The Heritage Walk combines a beautiful meander through nature with some interesting facts about Spier’s heritage. The walk takes you past some of the historic buildings (such as the 1822 Manor House and South Africa’s oldest dated wine cellar). There are also some interesting facts about Spier’s natural and social heritage on the walk, and information on some of Spier’s related projects. One example is the wastewater treatment plant that combines nature, art and technology, creating a space of cleansing and healing for one of our most precious resources.
The walk is circular and runs through our Protea garden as well as the avenue of indigenous coral trees. For the more adventurous, there are two callout points that add about 1 hour onto the walk. The walk is approximately 1.5 hours but guests have the choice to end at any time. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
River Walk (30 minutes)
Situated on the South bank of the Eerste River, the walk gives you an opportunity to observe close-up the large variety of Proteas growing on the farm. Well-known landscape architect Patrick Watson and horticulturalist Wilton Sikhosana helped establish this beautiful walk, which celebrates the magnificent national flower of South Africa.
VoiceMap Walking Tours
Download the VoiceMap app and listen to the two audio tours on your phone: Walk the Farm (which starts at the Hotel entrance) and the historic Gables tour (which begins at the Tasting Room).
Kids Activities
The Kids’ Clubhouse has been specially designed to roll out fun and secure childcare services for young hotel guests. While you are out wine tasting, at the pool or having lunch on the farm, know that your children are being thoughtfully cared for. There is an imaginative variety of developmentally appropriate activities for children, from age 2-12. Icing biscuits and pizza-making. Feather arts and farm walks. And lots more. There are two indoor play rooms, two bathrooms/toilets, two undercover outdoor porches and an outdoor play area. Parents may order lunch from the restaurant menu, or leave a packed lunch (mid-morning or mid-afternoon).
