Chundu Island Overview
Chundu Island is located 21km’s upstream from Victoria Falls in the Zambezi National Park and is without a doubt one of the most picturesque islands on the mighty Zambezi River. This tear drop shaped island is approximately 1.4km’s long and at its widest point approximately 0.4km.
Positioned on the end of the Island, the welcome area is sure to entice. Our main lodge is wrapped around magnificent trees and boasts the most incredible views of the Zambezi River. Adjacent to the reception area is our Island Shop where you can enjoy a bit of shopping and possibly take a few curios and island treasures home with you.
The heart of the lodge lies in its expansive reception, lounge, bar, inter-leading swimming pool deck and indoor/outdoor dining area. All with magnificent views, idyllic sunsets, guests are spoilt for choice. Ilala palm style roofs, wooden decking, wood and double skin canvas walls, the contemporary crisp and clean style is fresh and inviting.
Indulge yourself in our Wine Cellar and make a selection from a number of fine wines imported from South Africa. Sip on an aromatic Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp Chardonnay or a buttery Champagne while taking in the sights from the Pool deck. Your evening meal will find no better accompaniment than a full-bodied Merlot, robust Cabernet Sauvignon or flamboyant Pinotage.
Our bar area overlooks the main deck and is home to Chundu’s finest cocktails. Enjoy a refreshing Mojito or zesty Old Fashioned in the pool while overlooking the river and our seasonal beach. Six Dogs Gin is a firm favourite and our barman will be sure to help you make the best possible drink selections during your stay with us.
Our swimming pool is nestled away just around the corner from the main lodge to promote the serenity and tranquility of this relaxing cove.
Sunsets at Chundu Island are exceptionally special and we are sure you will find solace as you gaze into the evening sky.
The dining area at Chundu allows for indoor and outdoor dining as well as different views of the Zambezi as it is separated from the main lodge by natural fauna and flora and the most magnificent tree on the island, An ancient Acacia Albida.
As the water levels of the Zambezi River drops in the dry season, the beautiful white soft sandy beach on the western side (upstream end) is exposed. Huge Natal Mahogony, Acacia Albida and Water Berry Trees provide welcome cool shade in in the summer months.
We invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy every minute on Chundu Island with us.

Chundu Island Activities
There is so much to do at Chundu, making the most of the mighty Zambezi River, the stunning island setting and of course the Zambezi National Park. For those seeking a bit of a thrill, take a walk on the wildside walking in the National Park with an armed professional guide, looking out for big and small game – or set off downriver in an inflatable canoe, spotting elephants drinking from the banks while steering clear of inquisitive hippos and crocodiles. For the curious, consider morning or evening game drives in the park and fishing or bird walks on the island. And, when you’ve had enough excitement for the day, what about relaxing at the pool overlooking the river and park, an in-room massage and a sunset cruise on the water with cocktails and snacks.
SUNDOWNER CRUISES
Take a relaxed cruise in style as the sun descends in splendid multi-hued reflection on the surface of the Zambezi. Enjoy a drink and snacks on our comfortably furnished open air barge as you enjoy the enchanting tranquility of dusk enveloping the island.
SAFARI WALKS
Discover the thrill of walking through the Zambezi National Park with an armed guide, either in the early morning or late afternoon, studying the fascination of nature, while keeping an eye out for some of the bigger animals that populate this area, including elephant, warthogs, various antelope, buffalo, lion and even the elusive leopard.
CANOEING ON THE ZAMBEZI
Paddle down the mighty Zambezi for a couple of hours under the watchful eye of your qualified river guide. Comfortable and steady inflatable canoes seat two, making it a wonderful activity for a couple to share. Look out for elephants drinking from the shore, and of course hippos and crocodiles. This experience transforms from serene to exciting and back again in no time at all.
SAFARI DRIVES
Chundu Island offers both early morning and late afternoon safari drives. Safari drives are conducted in specially adapted open Landcruisers, with experienced and qualified guides. In the interests of conservation, no off-road driving is practiced. Safari drives take place in the Zambezi National Park, which together with the Victoria Falls National Park extends over an area of 56 000 hectares. A typical morning drive includes an early start with a fresh cup of coffee or tea and a snack, and a short ferry ride across the river to the park. From there your guide will drive you through the park for approximately 2.5 hours exploring the scenic beauty of this beautiful park while looking out for the numerous species that inhabit this area. Your guide will interpret animal behavior and interactions. In the late afternoon after a light tea, you can enjoy an afternoon safari drive, returning to the lodge on time for a sunset drink at the bar, or on the evening cruise.
FUN FISHING
Fish from the island or putter upstream on our fishing boat, trying your hand at catching the pugnacious Nembwe Bream or take on the tussling Tigerfish – we supply rods and tackle. While our chefs will be delighted to prepare a fish you’ve caught for you to eat, all fish that are not going to be eaten must be returned to the water. We are proud supporters of catch and release fishing. For serious fishermen, please enquire about fishing charters which we will be happy to book for you at an extra charge.
ISLAND WALKS
Wander the island pathways on your own, and discover our incredible birdlife, monkeys and Nyala families. Relax with a book or just enjoy the solitude at various points along the island. Children must be accompanied by an adult on island walks.
BIRDING
Birding on Chundu Island and in the Zambezi National Park is excellent with more than 400 species of birds recorded, including rarities like the African finfoot and even Pel’s fishing owl. The bird that we have adopted for our logo though is the Shalow’s Turaco. Similar in look and habit to the Livingstone’s Turaco (though never sharing a range), this bright green bird has the longest crest of all the Turaco’s. It occurs from western Angola and southern DRC to Tanzania, Zambia, the Caprivi Strip (Namibia) and northern Botswana. It is spotted fairly regularly on the Island as well as in the park.
TRIP TO VICTORIA FALLS
Embark on a spectacular tour of the Falls one of the days of your stay at Chundu Island. Proudly referred to as Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘The smoke that thunders’ by the locals; Victoria Falls has a combined width of 1,7 kilometres (approx. 1 mile) and height of 100 metres (330 feet), making it one of the world’s largest waterfalls and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Transfers to and from the Rainforest, with set pick up and drop off times are complimentary and the lodge staff will be happy to arrange for a guide to meet you at the Rainforest should you prefer a guided tour. Entrance fees to the Victoria Falls National Park, and the cost of the Victoria Falls guide are excluded, please check with the lodge receptionist for the latest fees.
HELICOPTER FLIPS
